GPS iPhone App Shootout - TomTom, AT&T, Navigon, and G-Map Compared!

I’ve been getting a lot of questions on our GPS app reviews. Which is the best, which I like, which you should buy. Here is an overview of the four apps that IGM has reviewed. Apps included are TomTom, Navigon, G-Map, and AT&T. Things are broken down into categories and I pick which I like for each category, then followed by a brief overview. Hopefully this helps people in their decision making. Note that there are a number of updates pending on these apps, so keep an eye out for further …

Looks like there’s no USA version. If they come out with one, I may check it out. Thx

W-T-F? Seriously? So, there’s a new version called U.S. and Canada that has all these features, but they’re not offering it the other packages? I don’t get it. Or are there other updates coming? I’ll email them, but it usually takes them two weeks to respond.

It does look nice, but annoyed it seems recent customers need to buy again.

No, this is a app that is available now in the app store. Their (G-Map) is running a special now with the app saling for $40 (39.99). Maybe the reason why no update for the other version is because this offer is better for everone (others were a trail to test the water) IMHO.

This is their upcoming release, right? I know they’re working on something that was supposed to be released last month. I’m not seeing the update though.

Hey Mike, I see that G-Maps has come out with a solution that covers US & Canada with these feature sets:
    - Real Time Traffic information
    - Text to Speech with spoken street names
    - Contacts saved in address book can be accessed directly
    - Music playback not interrupted by voice guidance

And much more; all for the great price of $70 (69.99). Now that’s value! Looking forward to see your update video on this one. Thanks

Yeah, their Live service will cost $20 I think as a one-time. They said it would come out in October. Live also has other interesting functions, but not sure if those are coming to the iPhone or not.

I’ve heard that Navigon was coming out with an update for Traffic next month as an in-app purchase. Has anyone else heard about this?

@devastator771 I believe as it stands right now, the only way to run different apps in background mode is when it’s jailbroken.

do any of them let you run other apps that play music other than ipod? because i love my live 365 app, lets me listen to thrash unlimited radio which would really suck if i had to turn it off to use my gps or vice versa

Navigon seems to be the better deal in my opinion. TomTom isnt saying much right now, but i think their really ashamed of all the negative reviews and is going to come out with an amazing update. Hopefully navigon keeps the updates coming and stays on top since i invested $69.00 in the app. It now has text-to-speech. NICE.

Yeah, I’ll be doing an update for 1.1-1.2. I’ve been using it, and so far seems OK. The TTS is nice. It’s probably going to be a week or so though. I want to test it more. Thx

You should do a review on version 1.2. Interested to hear about your opinion on their latest release. I enjoy your posts. Thanks for all the hard word and love watching your reviews. I also wish you would do more app reviews.

THANK YOU! I’ve been waiting for a long time for a video comparing all of these apps to one another!

Although I still wonder why NO ONE (in the U.S.) has done a thorough review of CoPilot Live…

As of 9/2/09 the sale is over. The price now is $90 ($89.99). Still $10 less then TomTom.
